That was unfortunate to hear, but it is great that she are positive to keynote next year!
The question is if we have time to invite another keynotespeaker? If I remember
correctly we come to the conclusion at last meeting that if Mel Chu was unable to attend we would only have Karen Sandler, do we still agree to that? Otherwise I suggest that we ask  Sumana Harihareswara.

As discussed I contacted Mel Chua to do our second keynote. She was very
positive and almost confirmed her participation, but had to change her
mind as she has an examination on the Monday after FSCONS.

She did, however suggest a few alternative speakers that could hold a
good keynote on the same topic. Since we don't really have time to hold
another proper vote, I hereby suggest that I try to get one of these as
a replacement for Mel. The suggestions are in her mail forwarded below.
Any objections?

Hi, Stian --

Unfortunately, I had to set a date for my preliminary doctoral
examinations between our last round of emails, and the only available
date range for my committee makes it impossible to keynote in Sweden on
Sunday afternoon and still be back in time for Monday examination
events.

However, I'd like to suggest several other people who might give great
talks on "The Semantics of Freedom." All are heavily involved with Free
Culture work.

* Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia engineering community manager
* Sky Croeser, Curtin University lecturer
* Andrea Horbinski, UC Berkeley PhD student
* Joseph Reagle, Northeastern University professor

I'd suggest reaching out to them and seeing if they can make the trip.

I'd love to be kept in mind for next year's FSCONS, especially now that
I know that speaker travel funding is available (and can think about
scheduling somewhat farther in advance). Next year also has the
advantage that I won't have my doctoral examinations scheduled in the
fall. :)

PS: For the record, I was thinking about a talk about how we've
constructed the boundaries of Free Culture through the words and
semantics we use in our dialogues -- and how those boundaries both
attract and repel people from various aspects of the movement.
