Hello,
This falls IMO in the scope of what FSCONS cares about.
I have got a recent experience (illustrated also by two screenshots),
hope you excuse me for sharing it here.
In short, a foundation "for a libre kernel" takes liberties :)
Less short:
1. You have to give up quite a lot of your rights, especially of
your privacy, to be able to participate in an event kept by The Linux
Foundation. I did not ever see similar terms anywhere else. I may be
badly informed but at least my colleagues do not recall such terms either.
2. You have to be careful to be able to notice that you accept the terms,
they are "well hidden".
The longer version:
To register oneself for the LinuxCon Europe (Düsseldorf, October 13-15)
you have to fill in data on 4 consecutive pages, with "continue" button
on each. On the 4th page, the _last_ step when you are about to pay the fee
you are asked to accept the terms and conditions, with a very nice text
in the "conditions" field, about "antiharrassment policy".
If you are not yet tired after filling those pages and not in a hurry
and also care about what you agree to, before clicking on "I agree"
you try the scroll bar - surprise! :
The second part of the conditions is: (verbatim)
"Photo & Video Release
I hereby consent to the photographing of myself and the recording of my
voice and the use of these photographs and/or recordings singularly or
in conjunction with other photographs and/or recordings for advertising,
publicity, commercial or other business purposes for The Linux
Foundation. I understand that the term "photograph" as used herein
encompasses both still photographs and motion picture footage."
Note the full absence of limitations, you grant a perpetual license
to record you anywhere and use the result for any purpose.
Isn't this remarkable? I do not question the desire of the organizers to
be able to document the summit, but the terms are alarmingly overbroad.
Your data is _meant_ to be sold and you get no compensation, nor there is
any provision for any limitation.
My inquiry was answered (summary) : "you have an option to ask
a photographer or video operator to not take a picture of you;
we can not remove the condition from the registration form;
we did not hide the information on purpose"
I have my own idea of the sincerity of such an official answer
but choose to keep it for myself.
Attaching the relevant parts of the screenshots.
There is nothing else in the conditions besides the antiharrassment
policy (which more or less recites what the laws otherwise demand:
"attendees should not engage in discriminatory or offensive speech or
actions regarding gender, sexuality, race, or religion"), and the
"surprising" text seen after scrolling.
Hope posting this here is not totally offtopic.
Otherwise I sincerely apologize and thankfully accept
suggestions of a more suitable forum to share such kind of stuff.
Regards,
Rune
