Hi,
I asked Patrice Riemens for speaker recommendations, and he was kind to offer
many, also with links to their work. See below.
Personally I think we should just go hard, full throttle and invite all of
them. But of course I would not do that without a due process in the committee
first.
We have a meeting tomorrow night -- it's too much to go through everything
below before this meeting, but can everybody have a look as far as possible,
and we can get started on the list. And work through the rest of it to the
second next meeting, and maybe we can get through this list before the summer
hollidays?

She's not the easiest to handle, and therefore I asked her first before

Neoliberalism has become the dominant ideology of the times. It has
established itself as a central feature of politics and has invaded all
industries. Not only does it define itself as a political and economic system
whose aim was to consolidate power in the hands of a corporate and financial
elite, it also wages an insidious war over ideas and words.
What to think of common phrases such as "market penetration", "target
audience", "on the radar" and the "submission" buttons that are everywhere?
Even NGO's and conferences claiming not to be infected by neoliberal thinking
use these words.
If the number of phrases that make direct reference to "whistles" is anything
to go by, "whistling" looms large in the consciousness of the English-speaking
peoples. The association with the blowing of whistles and the drawing of
attention to a misdemeanour extended into figurative use.
A whistleblower is a person who exposes any kind of information or activity
that is deemed illegal, unethical, or not correct within an organization that
is either private or public.
And, every time a whistleblower exposes government wrongdoing, the tactic of
governments is to try and demonize him/her as a traitor, and every time a
whistleblower exposes corporate wrongdoing, he or she can face harassment, an
increasingly hostile environment on the job, or lose his/her job.
What if you have a family to support and your integrity is on the line also? A
painful dilemma. And this is why we started our whistleblowing project for
data abuses, with support, congruence and coalition building in mind. We never
underestimate the possibility of creating change without necessarily doing it
in the public eye. Publication might not be the endgame, but can be, if
needed.
In this presentation, I will explain our whistleblowing process, how we
protect anonymity and confidentiality (and its limitations), present a sample
campaign ("bias and discrimination") and show the threat model coming out of
our research.
